Vasco was laid to rest, right after they docked in India on the 24th of December, 1524. Unfortunately, on the trip there, Vasco became sick. He was ordered to head back to the India Country and help oversee the progression of trades. His hopes of retiring and spending time with his family were out. Once his crew arrived back in Portugal, Vasco stayed just a short time to meet and married Cateriana Ataide. Da Gama returned to Portugal with samples of spices and precious stones. However, da Gama was unable to make a trade agreement with the ruler of the city. After restocking supplies, they sailed back to their Portugal homes in 1499. On the first voyage, from 1497 to 1499, he and his fleet reached Calicut, an important trading center in southern India. He wanted to prove that treasures could be found around the world. Once da Gama arrived in the country of India, he purchased silks and bought spices. Da Gama’s trip to India carried him and his mates close to two years before they reached their destination.
His goal was to complete the route that Bartolomeu Dias previously had begun several years earlier. There were enough spirits and food to keep them well-fed and in good shape for their journey to India. He was the first European who went to India through the Cape of Good Hope at the southern end of Africa.
